Montpellier, France--Fountains, Sunshine and Sea

There's a linkup today over at the multi-talented and inspiring Gabrielle's blog, Design Mom. Maybe you've heard of it? Of course you have.

Gabby's offered up some of  her blog space today to anyone who wants to share a little piece of their town.

My town is Montpellier, France; a buzzing, energetic university town only minutes from the Mediterranean Sea.

{most fun fountain ever!}
Although I live in a nearby suburb I love popping into Montpellier for a nice dinner, to do some shopping and to meet friends.

{Place de la Comedie}
We visited Montpellier years before we moved here and the city's many fountains and brilliant sunshine made a lasting impression. We had to call it home.

There are more than 300 days of sunshine per year and perfect temperatures of highs in the 80s F/30sC at the height of summer.

  For we sunshine loving Texans, it's the perfect fit.

  1. Great post Aidan! My mother's family is from Mèze, a small town near Montpellier. When I was a teenager, we lived in Montpellier for about six years. I spent many happy moments at the cafés Place de la Comédie with my friends. You're right, the weather is ideal there. I am long overdue for a visit! When I graduated from high school, we moved to Lyon, then on to Paris. None of those cities provided as much sun as Montpellier had ;-) Veronique (French Girl in Seattle)

    1. Veronique,
      So all of this looks pretty familiar to you. I've been to Meze and love the seaside towns so much. We stayed in a family campsite near Serignan a few years ago and were hooked on the area.
      You've steadily moved to less and less sun! Come back for a visit and we can spend the day on the beach.

  4. What a perfect combination - a university town AND the sea.

    Reading this and also Gabrielle's blog give me the itch to move overseas with my family. I did live in South Africa for two years before I was married with kids but to do it now would be even more amazing!

    You only live once and all that...

  6. Look at that ocean. Look at those fountains. Look at that beautiful family. What more reasons could one need to visit Montpellier? Your photos make me wish summer was here NOW!

  7. Oh my goodness, look at the sparkling Med. Breathtaking. It looks like you have an absolutely dreamy life in the south of France. Hope you are enjoying a wonderful evening.

  8. Montpellier has 100 fountains, I read. The earliest ones were designed to secure access to water, and then the former mayor Freche just liked them so much he wanted to put them in every quartier.

    We are very lucky to live here. :)

  9. I've been reading for a while because I love reminiscing about France (lived in Rennes). But I just realized that you're in Montpellier! My students in South Carolina tweet with a class at Internat d'Excellence in Montpellier :)

  10. What a gorgeous looking place, especially the sea. It wouldn't look out of place here in Australia. Always so refreshing to just look out at the ocean and see it sparkling. Have never been to Montpellier but would love to try it out one day :)
