Tom Darnell--Texan, Artist

Last week I got an email from another Texan living nearby. She and her husband have been here for years, since 1993, to be exact, and they have made a life here, had children here. More Texans making Tex-Mex and sharing the love in the South of France. I was delighted to hear from her.

But more than that (and the reason I'm sharing this with you) he is an artist. And I wanted you to see his work and read his story. I hope they don't mind my doing so.

As soon as I read the email, I went straight to his website to have a look. I don't know what I was expecting, really. But it wasn't what I saw.

His landscapes of plane trees along the Canal du Midi and starlings flying across a cloudy European sky are so real they could be mistaken for photographs. Is that a compliment to an artist? I hope so.
And the peonies. Delicate, feathery, barely pink. Stunning.

It's inspiring to see a person whose art is their livelihood. Someone who fulfills their passion every day. And makes something beautiful for all of us to enjoy.

Have a look. See for yourself. Tell him what you think.

What is your passion? Do you fulfill it a little bit every day?

  1. I guess mine is music. I started playing the trombone way back in middle school in the USA and played through college in the Cornhusker marching band. I stopped for a long time when I started working, but picked it back up when we moved to Provence over 10 years ago. I have been playing in village fanfares and jazz bands ever since. It's been the greatest way to meet the really local people.

  2. Meredith,
That's so cool. I never would have guessed that. I'm so glad you told us !I'm sure you have some stories from your French fanfares. I'm impressed.

  3. Incredible. Had you not said they were paintings, I'm not sure I would have noticed. The abstract Primordia Blue and Orange is my favourite.

  4. I'm glad you were as impressed as I was. I have to save my pennies because I think I have to have the starlings. It's amazing what people can do, isn't it?
Thanks for commenting too. I'm glad you're here!

    1. Thanks Aidan. Among other things (wine, cheese, abrupt introductions to anyone who is speaking English at the park...)the expat blog world is becoming my life line :)

    2. we have to stick together, don't we? it's weird how you completely zone in on english here, especially American english for me. the wine and cheese are worth it though.

    1. And the orchids. Don't forget the orchids! I have a real orchid in my bathroom and now I think of his painting every time I look at it.
I agree, it is super rock n roll cool, as my kids would say.

  8. Thanks, Aidan, for sharing this artist's work. He's so talented. His peonies are exactly like my pictures of the real thing on my blog...did ya notice that?

  9. Thank you for the introduction - I love all of his work but particularly the abstracts, you could lose yourself for hours in those.

  10. Wow, his landscapes are very hard to distinguish from photographs; they are amazing! I am not much into abstract art so that doesn't appeal to me as much as his flowers and landscapes.

    1. P-Daddy felt the same, not that into abstracts either. I would love to see one of those landscapes in person, wouldn't you? Just to get an up-close look at them.

It makes my day to read your comments. They're an answer to my floating words in blogland.
